A “sweet” invitation - You will want to do it all again!
You can get to know a city in many ways, depending on personal interests and wishes. One way, which is an integral part of any stroll across town, is to enjoy the offer of sweets in Zagreb. One thing is certain; the experience is very tasty and quite exhausting because “sweet” Zagreb is truly diverse!

Based on autochthonous Croatian and Austro-Hungarian traditions, the offer of sweets in Zagreb is very diverse and has been adapted to modern trends and current nutritionist guidelines. The citizens of Zagreb love their desserts, so it is difficult to imagine an end to a tasty meal without a cake to seal the deal. That is why most restaurants offer their own specialties – ranging from popular strudels and pancakes with all kinds of traditional and somewhat more inventive fillings, to homemade desserts, which are usually the house specialties. This includes savoury or sweet štrukle, made from thin pastry and fresh cottage cheese – which is a specialty that leaves few people unimpressed.
Real treats, however, can be found in numerous patisseries around Zagreb, all of which attract customers with special offers and a pleasant atmosphere. They are the perfect places to take a break from sightseeing while enjoying some cake, ice cream or coffee, regardless of whether you prefer fruit, chocolate or cheese cakes… We can certainly recommend orahnjača and makovnjača (walnut and poppy-seed rolls) made from kneaded dough, small pastries, etc. Some cakes are typical of certain holidays, such as Easter, Christmas, carnival and such…
Also make sure to try the famous kremšnite of Zagreb, as well as strudels made from thin pastry and filled with savoury or sweet cheese, poppy-seeds, apples, various cherries and nuts. Even if some of these cakes are international, the familiar taste is more intense due to the quality of the ingredients and the personal touch of the baker.
At any time of the year, “sweet” Zagreb is a true challenge and a journey anyone would want to repeat over and over…
