Advent in Zagreb: Holiday Spirit Is Coming to Your Home

Wonderful Christmas carols in the romantic atmosphere of Zagreb, twinkling of the candles, nativity scene and decorated windows; this is the atmosphere of Christmas returning to the streets of Zagreb in its original form. The atmosphere of the most beautiful Christmas market in Europe is brought to your home owing to modern technology.

This year’s Advent in Zagreb will last until 1 January. It will be different than before but it will still have the spirit of the most beautiful Christmas market in Europe. The Zagreb Tourist Board ensured that by preparing holiday programmes which depict the spirit of Zagreb during holiday season in an interesting and romantic way while adhering to epidemiological measures. The programmes will be marked by culture and will turn the entire city in an amazing Christmas fairy tale with a number of music festivals and concerts. The concerts for the citizens, but also visitors joining in person or virtually, will be made possible by excellent musicians such as the Zagreb Soloists, the Zagreb Chamber Orchestra and many other renowned musicians as well as aspiring artists. The Croatian National Theatre and Vatroslav Lisinski Concert Hall will also take part with their shows as well as several museums.

The Light of Zagreb is a new project of the Zagreb Tourist Board gathering ten institutions in the Upper Town which decorated their windows, inviting citizens to join in and create a warm story of unity and a wonderful holiday spirit. The online exhibition “Zagreb’s nativity scenes” consists of photographs of nativity scenes in churches taken between 2007 and 2020.

An augmented reality exhibition entitled “Virtual Christmas Windows” will bring holiday spirit to 18 locations in the city such as parks and large squares using animated motifs of this year’s Advent in Zagreb.

Other areas in the city will be decorated in the spirit of the season and the lighting of the candles surrounding Manduševac Fountain at the main Ban Josip Jelačić Square, which has already become a tradition, will also take place.
