Dear citizens and guests of Zagreb!
The month of December is filled with joyous feelings of Advent. The lighting of the first Advent candle in Ban Josip Jelačić Square at the end of November marked the beginning of the festive Yuletide season. Advent in Zagreb is a traditional event aimed at creating the most enchanting build-up to Christmas and conjuring up the beauty and joy of Christmas itself with its impressive programme of happenings. During the time of Advent, many of the city’s streets and squares offer delicacies to be enjoyed alfresco or themed programmes which will take you down memory lane.
There is a host of happenings in December which make our city festive and opulent. Do not miss the goings-on in the main square where daily programmes include events for children, cultural, artistic and musical performances. The programme kicked off on November 28th with the lighting of the first Advent candle, and the streets around the main square have been transformed into the traditional Christmas fair. Take a stroll along Gajeva and Bogovićeva streets and the European Square, where the sounds of music will help you find the perfect Christmas gifts, gingerbread cookies, colourful ornaments and Christmas tree decorations, as well as souvenirs made by Zagreb’s craftsmen, artists and manufacturers of traditional Croatian products.
Zagreb’s Advent fairytale continues with Advent in Zrinjevac. A stroll along the romantic alley of plane trees will take you to the main pavilion which is illuminated with a myriad of Christmas lights, and then continue on to the Ice Park where you will find a skating rink in one of Zagreb’s most beautiful parks. The rich choice of food and drinks offered at the stands is accompanied by various musical programmes. A particularly romantic atmosphere will be created by the Strauss Ensemble in the Oktogon Arcade. The sounds of waltzes and polkas will be complemented by the music played on the balconies of Zagreb’s downtown palaces.
If you are looking for something innovative and contemporary, Fuliranje is simply a must. For the first time this year, the event is taking place not only in Tomićeva Street, as previously, but also at Kurelčeva Street. This year we have succeeded in revitalizing the neglected and previously hidden downtown courtyards and passages. They have now been given a new lease of life as places where charming events spread the spirit of Christmas. The host of interesting events there include exhibitions, readings of literary works, workshops, lectures, theatre performances, light installations and concerts.
Advent has certainly taken over, but Zagreb offers even more by way of cultural, artistic, sporting and entertainment events. Everybody will be able to find something to suit their taste from the impressive programme of theatre shows, concerts, sporting events, exhibitions, fairs and other happenings. Visit the Lisinski Concert Hall and attend the Christmas concert there. Join the actors of the Croatian National Theatre for a visit of the theatre building and discover some of its secrets. Choose a theatre show in the Eurokaz 2015 programme, and do not miss the 48th Golden Pirouette, a traditional skating event.
The Advent offer gets better every year which is why we can proudly boast that Zagreb is on a par with other destinations that have a rich Advent offer as well.
Wishing you a very merry Christmas!
Yours sincerely,
Milan Bandić
Mayor of Zagreb
