Most noteworthy is the exhibition “The Challenge of the New: Zagreb to Vienna around 1900” in the Klovićevi dvori Gallery. It is not only important because it provides a chance to see about one hundred key works by Austrian and Croatian artists who at the turn of the 20th century were forming a new artistic vernacular in painting, sculpture and architecture within the framework of the European fin de siècle. It is important because it shows just how strong the cultural, diplomatic and all other kinds of links were between Croatia and Austria, Zagreb and Vienna.
This is a splendid start to 2017, the Year of Culture between Croatia and Austria during which, under the slogan “Together in Culture”, the two countries will more intensively than ever promote each other. Because, however strong those connections are, however gladly visits are exchanged, there is always something special just waiting to be discovered.
Towards the end of February we will also be enjoying documentary film. We can hardly wait for the 13th ZagrebDox festival which will this year be held from 26 February to 5 March. The varied programme, for which tickets are always in short supply, will offer an overview of the most interesting recent documentary productions in the international and regional competitions, in official and special programmes and a number of retrospectives which will be accompanied by guest appearances from some of the most significant documentary film makers today.
February is a reminder of how important love is, but this February in Zagreb is evidence of how deserving culture is of our love.
