European Best Destinations - Maksimir is among the most beautiful parks in Europe

According to voters of the European Best Destinations website, Zagreb’s Maksimir Park, boasting more than two hundred years of history, is one of the most beautiful parks in Europe.

According to voters of the European Best Destinations portal, Maksimir Park is among the most beautiful parks in Europe. After choosing Zagreb as the best Christmas destination in Europe, voters acknowledged this beautiful park and ranked it among the most beautiful examples of an urban oasis, on a par with Parc des Buttes Chaumont in Paris, El Retiro in Madrid, Hyde Park in London, Villa Borghese in Rome, Tiergarten Park in Berlin, etc.

The portal, used by many tourists as a source of travel recommendations, states that Maksimir Park was opened on the outskirts of Zagreb in the late 18th century and it is nowadays an integral part of the city. Although it spreads across only about 316 hectares, it is a habitat for many plant and animal species, and it has a great value in the conservation of endangered species. It is known as home to more than a hundred species of birds and, apart from a hundred year old oak forest, the park features many meadows, five picturesque lakes and a stream with diverse flora and fauna, all of which contribute to the park’s biological diversity.

Maksimir Park is nowadays protected as a monument of landscape architecture and a cultural and historic monument, and it is one of the symbols of the city of Zagreb. Throughout its two-hundred year history, numerous generations of Zagreb’s citizens have found it to be the perfect place for rest and relaxation, just as an increasing number of tourists have also discovered.
