Fil(m)harmonia – The Zagreb Philharmonic and a Film Classic in Kino Europa
For the sixth season running the Zagreb Film Festival and the Zagreb Philharmonic are bringing to the silver screen at Kino Europa the greatest classics from the era of silent film with musical accompaniment from the Zagreb Philharmonic!
This year the chosen film is the dizzying slapstick comedy “Safety Last!” from 1923, starring that enduringly popular and most American of comedy actors Harold Lloyd.
Lloyd’s unforgettable comedy character, “an optimistic youth in a ready-made suit”, represents one of the high points of the golden age of American silent comedy, and the coming screenings of his most famous comedy “Safety Last!” will mark in the best possible way the 100th anniversary of the first time this legendary character stepped onto the silver screen. The film “Safety Last!” is packed with hilarious and exciting scenes which even today have not lost their tension and delight with their charm. The film includes one of the most famous scenes from the era of silent film in which Lloyd desperately hangs from the hands of a huge clock with heavy traffic and a curious crowd far below. The scene is all the more impressive if we learn that Lloyd filmed it without the help of a stuntman! The music from the film, which was composed by the great Carl Davis, will be performed by the Zagreb Philharmonic Orchestra conducted by maestro Krešimir Batinić.
