Klovićevi Dvori – the Challenge of the New. Zagreb – Vienna Around 1900.

In the Klovićevi dvori Gallery on 9 February the exhibition “The Challenge of the New: Zagreb – Vienna Around 1900” opens.

The exhibition is sponsored by the President of the Republic of Croatia Kolinda Grabar Kitarović and will show about 100 key works of Austrian and Croatian artists who at the turn of the 20th century were forming a new artistic vernacular in painting, sculpture and architecture within the framework of the European fin de siècle. The exhibition will show the main protagonists of Art Nouveau (Secessionsstil) in Vienna: Gustav Klimt, Koloman Moser, Carl Moll, Josef Hoffmann and others who with their work influenced a new generation of Croatian artists and architects.

They brought the Secessionsstil from its home in Vienna to Zagreb, which at that time was undergoing its own great cultural and artistic development. The Secession artistic movement was a strong influence on Croatian artists who, thanks to their European references were the initiators of new directions in art at the turn of the century. The works at the exhibition will be borrowed from the most important Viennese museums and galleries and the most important museums and collections in Zagreb. This exhibition in Zagreb will for the first time present together, comparatively, Viennese and Croatian artists from the last decade of the 19th century to the end of the First World War. The exhibition runs until 7 May 2017.
