Musical Fairy Tale Festival – the Zagreb Music Biennale

The Zagreb Music Biennale is an international festival of contemporary music taking place for the 29th time this year from 22 to 29 April. It will offer audiences more than 30 concerts and musical performances.

Throughout the duration of the festival Zagreb will be a centre of culture and art, a city to which composers, music critics and the best performers will flock, as will fans of contemporary music from the neighbouring region and all over Europe.

This year will be a fairy tale, especially in the Zagreb Puppet Theatre for the premiere of the puppet show «The Frog Queen» for which, on the commission of the Zagreb Music Biennale, Sara Glojnarić wrote the music with Rene Medvešek conducting. That same evening will also be a fairy tale at the official opening of the Comedy Theatre where the premiere of "Klothň", an the opera in five movements by Polish composer Martyna Kosecka, performed by soloists along with the Choir and the Symphony Orchestra of the Ivan Zajc Croatian National Theatre in Rijeka, conducted by Berislav Šipuš and directed by Krzysztof Cichenski. The commission of an entire opera by the Biennale is the grand prize which the Polish artist won at the Zagreb Biennale in 2015 when her work “Kochawaya”, based on a Chinese fable, won the final of the Biennale competition for the best 5-minute opera. Kosecka found her inspiration for the libretto and the music in not one but several fairytales from around the world. The work of the Polish composer and the Polish Embassy in Zagreb also resulted in the partnership of the 29th Zagreb Music Biennale with Poland.
