On June 3rd and 4th, the Tuškanac plateau will be the venue for Zagreb’s new boutique festival – Reflektor. This art and music festival will feature performances by popular musicians as well as other concurrent events, such as exhibitions, literary evenings, plays, and after clubbing programs.
On the first day, audiences will have the opportunity to enjoy performances by two fantastic singers-songwriters, Anne Calvi and Lovely Quinces, as well as Side Project - an attractive electro pop duo from Zagreb, and the dynamic Slovenian quartet Koala Voice, while the second day will feature concerts by the British alter rock duo Blood Red Shoes, the band Jonathan from Rijeka, Straight Mickey And The Boyz from Belgrade, and the Irish post punk quartet Girls Names.
British songwriter Anne Calvi, known for her passionate approach to playing the guitar, with which she strives to imitate sounds of other instruments, has a blooming 8-year career under her belt. She has thus far released two studio albums, “Anna Calvi” and “One Breath”, and both were nominated for the most prestigious music award in Britain – the Mercury Award, as well as an excellent EP “Strange Weather”. Throughout her music career she has collaborated with numerous musicians and performed on tour with most of them, while her performance at Reflektor will be her first appearance in Zagreb.
The audience can also look forward to a performance by an excellent Croatian songwriter Dunja Ercegović, known by her nom de plume Lovely Quinces. She has thus far released two well received EP’s, “No Room For Us” and “Meet Me In Moscow, Part One”, and she regularly sells out venues she performs in across Croatia as well as numerous European countries. She received much praise and went on to work with numerous other musicians after collaboration with the band Giant Sand, whose European tour she performed on as a support act.
Side Project is a talented young duo, Luka Vidović and Anja Papa. They have recently released their debut album, “Things Which No One Else Should Know About”, which has won them accolades from domestic media. All the songs on the album are sung in English because the duo’s plan is to showcase their work beyond the Croatian borders. Apart from the two talented young musicians, the festival will feature a performance by Koala Voice, which has already won over Slovenian and European audiences with their debut album “Kangaroo’s Neighbour”. Their energetic performance will certainly set the audience onfire. On the second day,their act will be followed by the equally energetic British alter rock duo Blood Red Shoes, which consists of vocalist and guitarist Mary Carter and vocalist and drummer Steven Ansell. This will be their third performance in Zagreb, and their previous two concerts were among the best that concert season. Also on the second day of the festival the audiences will also have the opportunity to attend a performance by the attractive rock band from Rijeka – Jonathan, which is composed of musicians with great experience in the world of music. Although the band was formed in late 2013, their single “Maggie” and debut album “Bliss”, featuring songs with a characteristic indie sound and sung in English, attracted great attention from domestic audiences and critics. They went on to perform at open air festivals around Europe, and they also appeared as a support act during four concerts on a tour with The Editors.
Finally, the audiences can look forward to a performance by a splendid group from Belgrade, Straight Mickey And The Boyz, which combines various rock styles into a unique and recognisable musical style. The band has recently published a namesake debut album in a digital format. Last, but certainly not least, is the Irish quartet Girls Names from Belfast. Within the period of seven short years, these musicians have shaken up the local music scene. They draw their influences from a colourful list of performers, including Sonic Youth, Mission Of Burna, New Order and David Bowie. So far, they have released several Eps and three studio albums. Their appearance at Reflektor is part of their tour promoting their current album “Arms Around a Vision”.
Tickets for the Reflektor Festival can be purchased at Tvornica Kulture, the Aquarius CD Shop, the Dirty Old Shop and via Entrio. A one-day ticket for June 3rd costs 110 kuna in presales, while on the day of the concert the price will go up to 130 kuna. A one-day ticket for June 4th costs 60 kuna in presales and 80 kuna on the day of the concert. Festival tickets can be purchased at a price of 140 kuna in presales, and for 160 kuna on the day of the concert.
