The Art Pavilion - An exhibition of works by virtuoso sculptor Alberto Giacometti

Between September 20th and January 8th 2017, the Art Pavilion will feature an exhibition of works by the renowned sculptor Alberto Giacometti as part of the “Greatest Sculptors of the 20th Century” cycle.

After the excellent exhibitions of works by Miró and Rodin, between September 20^th and January 8^th 2017, the Art Pavilion will feature an exhibition of works by the renowned sculptor Alberto Giacometti (1901 - 1966). Works for this exhibition have been borrowed from the French Foundation Maeght, and visitors will have the opportunity to see some twenty of his drawings and as many photographs and sculptures.

Alberto Giacometti is known in the art world for his “thin people” sculptures, characterized by a rough, almost rusty surface, with body outlines so thin they are very breakable. The sculptures are also very metaphorical, and their creation is often associated with the existentialist philosophy of Jean-Paul Sartre, who was Giacometti’s very good friend.  Although the artist always claimed that Sartre’s philosophical ideas did not influence his works, this exhibition reflects the times we live in more so than ever before.

Exhibition visitors will have the opportunity to see the “Women of Venice” sculptures, which the artist presented at the 1956 Modern Art Biennale in Venice, as well as his famous piece “The Walking Man”, an emblematic masterpiece and the world’s most expensive sculpture, which sold at a Sotheby’s auction in London for an astronomic 104 million Euros.
