Zagreb and Rijeka - The European University Games Begin
As hosts of the European University Games, taking place between the 12th and 25th of July, Zagreb and Rijeka will welcome more than five thousand student athletes from more than 45 European countries, and once again send images of a beautiful sports tale to the world.
If you are a fan of sports and competing, and you plan to visit Zagreb, make sure to do so this month because Zagreb and Rijeka will be hosts to the European University Games between the 12th and 25th of July. More than five thousand student athletes from more than three hundred universities from 45 countries will participate in this largest sporting competition for university students. They will compete in a total of 21 sports, while two sports – swimming and table tennis, will also have categories for disabled students. Zagreb has a long tradition of organizing sports events and it has an infrastructure developed for all sorts of sporting activity. The first student sports club at the University of Zagreb was founded 112 years ago, and ten years later the university Association of Academic Sports Clubs was established. Compulsory physical education classes were introduced in Croatian universities more than half a century ago, and in 1987 Zagreb was host to the Universiade, the most significant sporting event in Croatian history. After that competition the doors to even quicker development of Croatian sport as a whole were opened.
All sporting events are always followed and participated in by numerous citizens of Zagreb, wholeheartedly supporting the athletes to achieve the best results possible. Apart from that, do not forget that Zagreb has the image of a city inhabited by warm hearted and hospitable people, which is noticed by tourists and often mentioned as a great asset. That is why the European University Games are an ideal opportunity to visit and get to know Zagreb through a great sporting story.
