The fifth international music festival A Showcase of Contemporary Sound will be held from 3 to 6 May at various venues in the Zagreb Student Centre, with around 100 artists from 12 countries performing.
The venues will be Teatr &TD, Galerija SC, the MM Centre and the French Pavilion. Entry to the festival is free. The festival will present artists from Austria, Belgium, Croatia, Denmark, England, France, Germany, the Netherlands, Portugal, Slovenia, Serbia and Switzerland.
Musical composers, artists of sound, musical explorers and improvisers, self-taught masters and inventors of instruments will be presented through almost 30 programmes in the area of contemporary sound.
The festival has been preceded by a rich introductory programme: interviews with the artists in cooperation with partners the Multimedia Institute, the Močvara Gallery, the Sonic Acts festival and the Institut Français. The MM Centre on Tuesday 2 May will be screening the film “Electro Pythagoras (A portrait of Martin Bartlett)” about the composer and proud homosexual who in the 1970s and 1980s first used a “micro computer”. Director Luke Fowler with this film pays homage to Bartlett’s musical ideas and works. That same evening in the Semicircular Hall of Teatr &TD a concert will be held with a performance by three masters of improvisation: Pierre Bastien, Franz Hautzinger and Alen Sinkauz. We will also see what participants in a workshop for wind and other musical instruments and for shapers of sound led by the Berlin wind ensemble Zinc and Copper learned at the final concert of the workshop leaders and participants which will close the first day of the festival on 3 May in the Great Hall of &TD.
