The beginning of the year in Zagreb is marked by major sporting events. The season kicked-off with the men's and women's slalom races for the World Cup held on Sljeme summit. These races will be followed by a series of splendid events that bring top athletes, as well as numerous lovers of sports and games, to our city. Some of them have already had an opportunity to explore the beauties of this city, while others have still yet to discover Zagreb’s hospitality.
 
Handball World Cup
The Zagreb Arena Hosts the Handball Finals
Between January 16th and February 1st, Croatia will host the Handball World Championship, which is set to take place in seven cities. Second-round games, as well as the championship final, will be played in Zagreb where a magnificent arena with more than 15,000 seats has been built specifically for this purpose.
 
Vatroslav Lisinski Concert Hall
35th Anniversary
At the end of last year, the Vatroslav Lisinski Concert Hall celebrated 35 years of its existence. The history of this remarkable cultural institution has left a mark on Zagreb with its impressive repertoire and this year, again, a rich and innovative program has been prepared for its numerous patrons.

Eagerly Awaiting Carnival
The 183rd annual carnival in Samobor, the favorite day-trip destination for numerous citizens of Zagreb, will be organized on the city streets and squares between February 13th and February 24th.

Zagreb Hosts Top Tennis Players Once Again
For the fourth time, Zagreb will be host to the ATP tournament PBZ Zagreb Indoors 2009, which will be held between January 31st and February 8th at Dom Sportova Sports Hall. During this event, top names from the world of tennis will compete against the best Croatian players.

The Number of Visitors on the Rise
The medieval Zrinski Mine, which was built on the hillsides of Zagrebačka Gora back in the 16th century, is currently open to visitors and an ever-increasing number can soon experience the former silver-mine’s treasures though a network of new tunnels that will cover 150 meters.
