A Day on Jarun Lake: As if You Are Not in the City

For those who want a short break from sightseeing, all roads lead to its recreational zones located in the city and easily accessible by tram.

With nicer weather approaching, we are prompted to spend more time in nature which you will encounter everywhere in Zagreb. At the very heart of the city there is Zrinjevac Park, which is extended by a string of green parks together with the Botanical Garden. The main role of the Garden is conservation and protection of rare and endangered plants. However, if you wish to spend an entire afternoon or a day in recreational activities, there are several options, all of which are reachable by tram.

One of them is the Jarun Sports and Recreation Centre. Its total surface is 240 hectares, out of which almost a third is water. The space of Jarun is a habitat to various animals (130 types of birds and 29 types of fish).

In addition to the racing track, which is 2250 metres long and a place where many rowing, kayak and canoe races are held, there are also two lakes and six islands. Along the coast of Jarun lakes, pebbly beaches stretch for 2.5 kilometres and are supported by lifeguards. During swimming season, the water quality is regularly tested. The beach capacity is around 20 000 swimmers so Jarun is referred to by citizens as “the Sea of Zagreb”. The bathing area on Trešnjevka Island is adjusted to persons with special needs, so owing to the ramp, it is possible to access the lake in a wheelchair.

There are many sports facilities for the use of athletes and recreationists. Rowers, kayakers and canoeists train and compete on the racing track. Yachtsmen and women as well as windsurfers train on the big lake. There are cycling, walking and rollerblading tracks, which are 5.5 kilometres long. There are also courts for soccer, basketball, bocce, volleyball, handball, beach soccer, badminton, mini golf as well as hanging bowling alley, skate park, tables for table tennis and outdoor chess.

In the meadows and shady groves there are 20 gazebos with barbecue facilities so there is everything necessary for an active day outdoors.

In the area of Jarun, there are several catering facilities and night clubs, which makes it an excellent place to have fun, especially in the evening.
