4th Days of Samobor's Cream Cakes

Cream cakes have been Samobor's trademark for a long time. Towards the end of May, the town will stage interesting events devoted to this sweet delicacy which tourists will certainly find attractive.

During the last weekend in May, Samobor will host the 4th Days of Samobor's Cream Cakes. Famous for this sweet delicacy, Samobor has become a favorite excursion place for the many people who come for the sole purpose of indulging in this delicious cake. The creator of the Samobor cream cake was Ðuro Lukačić, who had arrived in Samobor in 1923 to work as an apprentice in his brother's pastry shop. He continued his education and gained additional experience in some of Zagreb's pasty shops, such as Kostinčer and Hajoš. When he eventually came up with his cream cake, it was based on the recipes of several top pastry chefs.

The Days of Samobor's Cream Cakes were organized for the first time in 2001, when a gigantic, one-ton cream cake was the main attraction. Almost all the Croatian media covered the news about the enormous cake and, as a result, the streets and squares of Samobor ended up being too narrow for all the visitors who had come to see it. And not only to see, but also to taste the mega cake and confirm its edibility. During the festival, Samobor's housewives prepared this specialty in their homes and competed for prizes for their creations. The smallest cream cake, only 1 centimeter in size, was one of the attractions of the festival. It was made by Robert Librić who also won a special recognition for his efforts in promoting Samobor's tourist idiosyncrasies.

The organizer of this festival is Samoborfest who promises that a lot of fun will again be had by the citizens of Samobor and their guests. The event is held under the auspices of the city of Samobor, Zagreb County and its tourist board.
