A Diverse Concert Programme for March

The Culture Factory has announced performances by numerous music stars in March. Concerts include those by Croatian musician Jura Stublić, British songwriter and guitarist Hugh Cornwell, the undisputed queen of Roma music and a great humanitarian Esma Redžepova, as well as many other names from the international music scene.

Judging by the announcements, March in Zagreb’s popular club, the Culture Factory, will be very eventful. The party will begin on March 6th with the performance by the famous Croatian musician Jura Stublić. As a successful singer/songwriter, he gained popularity through music during the existence of his new wave band “Film” but, even after its demise, Stublić has continued with a successful solo career that is still ongoing today.

One week later, on March 13th, the Culture Factory stage will host a performance by Hugh Cornwell; one of the most significant British songwriters and widely-recognized live performers, he was the original guitarist and singer of the legendary punk group: The Stranglers. In his solo career, Hugh Cornwell has released eight studio albums, the most recent entitled “HooverDam”, which is also the name of his current world tour that he will present in Zagreb.

On St. Patrick’s Day, March 19th, the Culture Factory will customarily organize an Irish feature consisting of numerous Croatian bands, including the popular Belfast Food. This band from Rijeka has dedicated practically their entire career to covering original Irish folk songs.

Towards the end of the month, on March 26th, her faithful Zagreb audience will once again be visited by the undisputed queen of Roma music, Esma Redžepova. The great Macedonian musician, and an even greater humanitarian, has gained a global reputation during her career that spans half a century. She has thus far held more than eight thousand concerts, sang in some fifteen languages, and has become a synonym for original gypsy music. Proof of this is her 2005 album “Esma: The Queen of the Gypsies”, released by the Dutch label World Connection, which confirmed her entry into the top of the world of ethno music. Since then, her CD’s can be purchased in stores from London and Paris to New York and Tokyo, along with names such as Cesaria Evora, Omara Portuondo, and Amalia Rodriguez.

This great star will certainly be difficult to match; however, just one day later, this is exactly what another band, These New Puritans, will attempt. They are one of the most contemporary names of the British post punk scene, whose style is based on the heritage of popular British punk bands such as “The Fall” and “Wire”.
