A wellness center atop unique oil sources

The long awaited construction of a medical center for rheumatic and skin diseases is expected to begin soon in Ivanić Grad. The Special Hospital for Medical Rehabilitation Naftalan, built on top of unique and therapeutic oil sources, has launched a public tender for a new co-investor.

The Special Hospital for Medical Rehabilitation Naftalan in Ivanić Grad will soon embark on the development of a large medical wellness facility. An international tender for new co-investors has recently been launched and will remain open until June 9th. The development plans include the building of both indoor and outdoor swimming pools with geothermal water, a hotel with two hundred beds and a convention center, for which designs have already been drawn and planning permits have been approved by the local authorities. The hospital, Naftalan, is located on the rolling hills of Mt. Moslavačka Gora, about 27 kilometers from Zagreb. It was built atop medicinal oil beds that are unique in Europe. Naphthalene is a specific and very rare type of oil which has been proven to help with the treatment of various rheumatic and skin diseases, as well as with some other medical conditions. The only other known well of the same kind is located in Baku in Azerbaijan.

The hospital’s current capacity is too low to meet the current demand. Its 111 beds are always full as numerous patients from all over Croatia and abroad come here to seek a cure for their psoriasis and various rheumatic diseases. Most of the foreign patients come from Russia, Denmark, Italy and Slovenia but the hospital is often forced to turn patients away, as the interest far exceeds the available capacity. Numerous foreign investors have already shown great interest in co-financing the construction of new hospital facilities. It is expected that some of the bidders will come from those countries where Naftalan has already made a name for itself and from which the largest number of patients come for treatment.
