An international festival of contemporary theater
This year’s Eurokaz, thematically dedicated to American theater, will introduce several legendary theater stars and choreographers as well as numerous talented and upcoming young artists.
Between June 21st and August 3rd, Zagreb will be host to the 22nd International Festival of Contemporary Theater, Eurokaz. This year’s theme is dedicated to American theater. Besides several big theater stars and choreographers, the audience will be introduced to young American performers led by The Nature Theatre of Oklahoma who will perform a shortened version of their hit-play No Dice, originally eleven hours long. Cynthia Hopkins and her DeLuxe Band will also perform. Certainly, the biggest star of this year’s Eurokaz will be Akram Khan who will present his project Bahok, which was created for the Chinese National Ballet and is the first of his choreographies that he does not dance in.
Apart from the legendary Wooster Group, the American group Goat Island will also perform their play, The Lastmaker, which premiered last year in Zagreb’s &TD Theatre, while Roysten Abel of India will present his musical project with the participation of thirty original sufi musicians. As part of the program dedicated to domestic production, &TD Theater and Eurokaz will set up several plays; “U agoniji” (In Agony), directed by Branko Brezovac; “Toranj loše glazbe” (The Tower of Bad Music), directed by Nik Ðurić; and “Lutkina kuća – zmija mladoženja” (The Doll’s House – A Serpent Groom), directed by Anja Maksić.
The program concept of Eurokaz is bound by no genre; therefore, theater, dance, performance-art and all other forms of stage expression can be presented here, but they are always tied to certain themes that cover particular theater phenomena. Along with the international program, Eurokaz regularly follows developments in the domestic theater scene. Throughout its history, more than three hundred theaters groups from all over the world have performed in Zagreb.
