Children and Folklore

Between 18th and 22nd June, Ban Josip Jelačić Square and Gradec will again be the main venues for the International Folklore Festival. The theme of this year's event is dedicated to children's folklore.

Numerous folklore ensembles from Croatia and abroad will participate in the 46th International Folklore Festival which will be held between 18th and 22nd June. Since its first edition in 1966, the festival has become the most prestigious showcase of genuine folklore in Croatia.

Through music, dance and different characteristics of folklore, this event presents the traditional assets of different nations and affirms the existence of cultural diversities in a highly globalized world. The main theme of this year's edition of the festival, entitled Children and Folklore, is dedicated to folklore traditions which involve children. These will be presented on two large stages at Ban Josip Jelačić Square and in Gradec. Young participants will demonstrate games and contents which were originally created for children, and they will thus showcase the values of the traditional heritage of their respective regions, but they will also present their take on adult folklore. Apart from children's folklore ensembles, the 46th International Folklore Festival will also gather many adult folklore groups, and so the citizens and guests of Zagreb can look forward to musical and dance performances by folk dancers and singers from different regions of Croatia and abroad.

Stage performances will be accompanied by a programme of exhibitions themed around children, concerts of traditional church and world music, as well as many dance and music workshops.
