Cinema Under the Stars
For the second consecutive year, film buffs who find themselves in Zagreb this summer can look forward to a special experience. The doors of the unique Gradec Summer Cinema will open every evening from 31 July to 4 September for free outdoor projections of films of various genres.
Once again, the citizens of Zagreb can look forward to a special treat this year – film projections under a star-studded sky. For the second consecutive year, the Gradec Summer Cinema will be staged at St. Catherine's Square in the Upper Town, also known as Gradec. Films will be shown free of charge every evening from 31 July till 4 September.
Judging from last year’s turnout, when the outdoor cinema was opened in Gradec for the first time, visitors can look forward to an excellent movie-going experience. There were not enough seats for all those who wanted to attend last year, but, since the films were shown outdoors, even that kind of unexpected demand was easily met. The message of last year’s event was clear: this type of light evening entertainment is a big hit, especially in view of the fact that the number of young visitors to Zagreb grows every summer and that they are the prime audience for active entertainment of the kind offered by the cinema. The experience will certainly be repeated this year. Besides quintessential American box office hits, the programme will also feature Hungarian, Spanish and Israeli productions, as well as a mini retrospective of last year's Vukovar Film Festival, together with a number of lesser known but equally attractive films.
The Gradec Summer Cinema will kick off in a festive way with ‘The King's Speech’ and it will conclude on 4 September with the showing of the film ‘Mr. Nobody’ – the awarded futurist drama about the oldest man in the world.
The selection of the films for this year's Summer Cinema reflects the organizers’ desire to target the widest range of movie-goers' tastes. Even the youngest film buffs will come into their own, especially on the last day of the event when the big Mascots Ball is scheduled to take place at 7 P.M.
All the projections will start at 9 P.M. and the entrance is free of charge.
