Exhibitions galore - Miljenko Stančić, Braco Dimitrijević, Venetian Baroque Shine, Historic Clocks on Belltowers
There are wonderful art exhibitions in the galleries and museums of the city of Zagreb. The monographic exhibition “A Homage to Miljenko Stančić” marking 90 years since the birth of, and 40 years since the death of the noted Croatian painter has opened in the Art Pavilion.
The exhibition of more than 80 works presents various phases in the painter's opus. Some of the painter's best works are presented, including “St Florian” from 1951, “Dream (Lovers)” from 1963, “Lovers” from 1962 and “Musicians (Slumbering Wedding)” from 1957. The exhibition will be open in Zagreb until 7 May. Miljenko Stančić's work has been classified as magical realism, metaphysical, fantastical and phantasmogorical painting, while some critics consider him the originator of surrealist painting in Croatia. Alongside his painting he worked as an illustrator for newspapers, books and magazines as well as set design. Renowned authors including Miroslav Krleža wrote about Stančić's painting, as did many art historians such as Ljubo Babić, Josip Depolo, Vladimir Maleković, Tonko Maroević, Jerolim Miše and international names such as Stephane Rey and Patrick Waldberg.
The Museum of Contemporary Art in May will hold a large exhibition presenting Braco Dimitrijević. The exhibition will cover all phases of the artist's international career, from “Casual Passer-by” from 1971, giant photo portraits of «ordinary» people which he put in places normally reserved for political or advertising messages, to the most recent works which this radical pioneer of conceptual art exhibited at the Tate in London and the Musée d'Orsay in Paris, and in which he combined installations, photography, video, painting and sculpture.
