Get to know the indigenous song and dance treasures
For the 49th consecutive year, in mid-July the streets of Zagreb will once again be filled with song and dance provided by Croatian folklore associations from Croatia and abroad who will turn the city centre into a unique stage.
This year’s International Folklore Review, taking place for the 49th time between the 15th and 19th of July at Zagreb’s main square of Ban Josip Jelačić as well as the historic centre of the city, is dedicated to the folklore of Dubrovnik-Neretva County, which includes the southern Dalmatian islands, the Pelješac peninsula, the city of Dubrovnik and its surroundings (Župa Dubrovačka, Konavle), as well as the areas around the Neretva River towards the border with Hercegovina. Apart from numerous folklore associations, there are also a number of church choirs in the area whose repertoire are popular church carols, especially Marian songs. A concert of klapa singing will present the diversity of the genre. This year’s Folklore Review will be an opportunity for the attendees of the summer camp of the Croatian Music Youth of Grožnjan to present themselves to audiences with the concert “Ethno on a Journey across Croatia”. Apart from stage shows, it will also feature dance and music workshops with local as well as foreign heads.
The folklore review will feature performances by about twenty folklore associations and singing groups from Croatia, and around ten folklore ensembles from abroad (France, Canada, Kosovo, Macedonia, Germany, Peru, Portugal and Spain). In cooperation with the Ethnographic Museum of Zagreb, the event will also feature an exhibition and lectures about music and wedding heritage.
