New Telescope in Place

Astronomy enthusiasts in Zagreb these days can enjoy an even better view of the vastness of space through the new telescope which was installed at the Zagreb Observatory in late November.

The installation of the 37,000 Euro new apochromatic telescope lasted nearly five months. Numerous space and celestial body enthusiasts who were waiting for this day in eager anticipation will be pleased to learn that the telescope is finally in place. It was by no means an easy task to replace the former 40-year old Zeiss telescope with the new one. However, the works have been completed and the Observatory is finally fully prepared to receive visitors.

Apart from the new telescope, the 1903 Observatory also has a new detector of cosmic radiation which was a gift from Armenia.

The good news does not end here. The staff of the Zagreb Observatory have restructured and revamped the Observatory’s web pages (www.zvjezdarnica.hr) to make them more informative and more easily accessible to the general public, students, professors and other astronomy enthusiasts. In addition to the much more user friendly interface, new contents have been added to the Observatory’s home page (history, popularization, education, science, publishing activity, etc.) as well as a picture gallery, weather forecasts and visitors’ survey. The intention was to give the visitors a better overview of the Observatory’s work and its educational activities. One of the principal novelties is the Observatory Newsletter which will be emailed to subscribers to keep them abreast of the events organized by the Observatory (lectures, seminars, courses, observation sessions, etc.)
