Rembrandt's prints and antique clocks

Concurrently with the exhibition of prints by Dutch master Rembrandt Harmenszoon van Rijn, the Museum of Arts and Crafts in Zagreb will open its doors in December for the largest show ever of clocks in this part of Europe, featuring clocks made between the 17th and 20th centuries.

RembrandtStarting December 9th, an exhibition of prints by one of the greatest European painters and printmakers of all time, Rembrandt Harmenszoon van Rijn, will be open at the Museum of Arts and Crafts in Zagreb. The exhibition is being organized in cooperation with the Alte Galerie am Landesmuseum Joanneum of Graz, and it will feature one of the best collections of Rembrandt’s original prints. Rembrandt aficionados will have an opportunity to view a total of 103 of the artist's print works which, for the first time ever, are being exhibited outside the Austrian museum. The exhibition will remain open until February 16, 2009.

Concurrently with that exhibition, between December 23rd and February 15th, a large show of clocks made between the 17th and 20th centuries is being organized at the Museum of Arts and Crafts. The exhibition will feature a selection of clocks from the holdings of the Museum of Arts and Crafts, the Museum of Slavonia in Osijek, the City Museum of Varaždin and the Croatian History Museum in Zagreb. The exhibition is the largest show ever of clocks in this part of Europe and it has been themed, rather than just presented chronologically. In such a way, visitors will be able to familiarize themselves with particular aspects of clocks that are to be exhibited in groups such as: clocks which only measure hours; the Baroque – invention of the pendulum and the beginnings of a house-clock; Baroque types – classicistic decoration; mythological themes; characters – historic, contemporary, allegoric; clocks as architecture; clocks as paintings; clock sculptures; wall regulators; historicism on a wall or fireplace; dedication to shape – secession and art-deco, clocks to watch and listen to, converted clocks; and domestic clock-makers – designers and distributors. The exhibition will feature a total of 189 standing and wall-mounted clocks.
