The 32nd Week of Contemporary Dance - Top class performances from all over the globe
The 32nd Week of Contemporary Dance will be marked by the best productions of the Croatian and international dance scenes, but it will also feature an array of novelties in its programme. The festival will take place between May 29th and June 20th in several locations around town.
For 32 consecutive years, Zagreb has been host to the Week of Contemporary Dance. During this year’s edition, between May 29th and June 20th, performances by globally renowned dance troupes will again complement the best Croatian dance shows. Besides at the Zagreb Dance Centre, the main festival venue, the performances will also take place on the stages of the Zagreb Youth Theatre, the Gavella Theatre, the Museum of Contemporary Art, the Culture Information Centre and the Student Centre. The festival will also feature workshops calling for active participation from audience members, presentations of works by young dancers, film screenings, etc.
This year, the Week of Contemporary Dance will be opened by performances from Croatia, which have attracted the attention of audiences, critics and foreign promoters over the past few seasons. They will be presented as part of the “Croatian Choreography Platform” programme, including the play “Pokret-ač” by choreographer Aleksandra Janeva Infeld, and performed by the Studio of Contemporary Dance. The audience is in for a special treat called “Koreografska fantazija br. 1”, or Choreographic Fantasy no. 1, by Marijana Krajač, which will be performed on the roof of the Zagreb Dance Centre. There will also be a performance by Matija Ferlin’s show from the “Sad Sam Almost 6” series, a new version of the play “Crtač” produced by BADco, but featuring Croatian dancers from the “Rekvijem za Z” dance ensemble from Zagreb, etc.
Some of the foreign guest performers at the festival include Barac Marshall, as of recently the art director of the Israeli dance troupe – Inbal Dance, who will perform their show “Wonderland”. The Week of Contemporary Dance will also feature two EU projects – “Communicating Dance” and “Migrant Bodies”, which bring together dancers from several countries. Another project will also be based on cooperation between dancers, writers and visual artists. The international part of the program is dedicated to cooperation with France as part of the Rendez-vous project, which is a festival celebrating France in Croatia and it features some popular names as well as newcomers among French choreographers.
The organizer of the Week of Contemporary Dance is the Croatian Institute for Movement and Dance, and it is taking place under the auspices of the Ministry of Culture of the Republic of Croatia, the City of Zagreb, the Zagreb Tourist Board, EUNIC in Croatia, and the Embassy of Israel.
