The ethnographic collection of the Croatian House “Materina Priča” provides visitors with a new tourism programme - ETNOsphere. The programme is aimed at all visitors who want to get to know the folklore traditions and customs of Zagreb and its surroundings which are presented by folklore ensembles through song and dance. Visitors will also become familiar with some old crafts, such as “licitar” making, the famous lace craft of Lepoglava and various specialties of traditional cuisines.
The programme lasts two hours and a visit can be arranged through tourist agencies. It can be tailor-made to suit the particular requirements of each group, regardless of the number of participants.
The Croatian House “Materina Priča” was opened in 2013 on Preradovićeva Street in downtown Zagreb as part of a non-profit project by the “Petrine Pletilje” (Petra’s Weavers) Association, which specialises in making indigenous souvenirs. It is decorated like a country house typical of the late 19th or early 20th century when Croatia was part of the Austrian-Hungarian monarchy, which invested a lot into rural development and was famously the world’s largest exporter of agricultural products.
The house features an old loom on which linen was first produced and then used in the making of everyday and festive clothing and home furnishings. The collection also includes an old millstone used for manual wheat grinding, a traditional foot powered pottery wheel used for making clay kitchenware and an array of other old items.
Admission to the Croatian House “Materina Priča” is free of charge.
