The greatest hits from contemporary theatre production

The 9th Festival of World Theatre will take place in Zagreb between the 9th and the 27th of September. Some of the highlights include: one of the most radical interpretations of “Othello”; a Warhol-like performance of the play “Dorian Grey”; and “Gardenia” – currently one of the most successful plays from the stages of Paris, London and New York.

As autumn draws near, the cultural scene in Zagreb becomes increasingly richer and more diverse. As in previous years, the Festival of World Theatre will take place between the 9th and the 27th of September. It will feature some of the currently greatest theatre titles from capital cities around the world; the plays will take place on the stages of the Zagreb Youth Theatre, the Croatian National Theatre and the Gavella Theatre.

The festival will be opened by an affirmed favourite of the Zagreb audience, director Thomas Ostermeier from Berlin, with one of the most radical interpretations of Shakespeare’s “Othello”. The play is already generating excellent reviews and it will surely be long remembered. Among the numerous plays, aficionados of this festival will be glad to see the arrival of the renowned Flemish artist, director, choreographer, set-designer and writer, Jan Fabre, who will present his vision of the myth of Prometheus.

Moreover, the festival will also be visited for the first time by Dutch director, Ivo van Hove, one of the key figures in new theatre, who has influenced the entire global scene with his original combination of drama, video and film. He will be presenting his play, “Opening Night”, which is based on the cult film by Nick Cassavetes. The play “Dorian Gray”, directed by Bastian Kraft of the Burgtheater from Vienna, will also surely be popular. It is a contemporary theatre story that deals with obsession about appearance and a perfect body, based on the principle of a Warhol-like performance, in which the image of Dorian Grey is multiplied into an unimaginable number of copies. The festival finale will be marked by one of the currently best plays from the stages of London, Paris and New York: “Gardenia” by Belgian choreographer and director, Alain Platel.
