A New Venue for Cultural Events

Although it was opened less than two months ago, the new Museum of Contemporary Art has quickly become an attractive venue for cultural events in Zagreb. Numerous large, as well as smaller scale exhibitions are in the pipeline. Visitors can also expect an array of world-famous cultural and entertainment treats.

After the spectacular opening of the magnificent new building of Zagreb’s Museum of Contemporary Art, which drew a great visitor interest, the museum is readily opening its doors for new events. The very beginning of the year has already indicated that the museum is slowly but surely gaining the status of an attractive venue for various cultural events, which do not necessarily include exhibitions.

This year’s exhibition season started with a large retrospective exhibition by Aleksandar Srnec, one of the most prolific Croatian artists of the last century. Apart from painting, he tried his hand very successfully at film and graphic design. His name is tied to Zagreb’s well known art group, Exat 51, which was intensely immersed into total-design as far back as the 1950’s. The exhibition will remain open until St. Valentine’s Day. Apart from featuring paintings, photographs, and an array of experimental lumino-kinetic objects, it will be further complemented by thematically-tied film evenings.

In the upcoming program, the museum will feature a large international exhibition “A Pair of Left Shoes – Reality Check in Eastern Europe”, which will be open from April until July, when another cultural treat is in store for the museum’s visitors. In cooperation with London’s Tate Modern Museum, the Zagreb Museum of Contemporary Art will present the world-famous duo, Gilbert and George. Their show in Zagreb will probably go down in history as the pair’s final large exhibition. They are one of the greatest contemporary artists whose charming enthusiasm and eccentric works have attracted modern art aficionados worldwide.

In between the exhibitions at the new building of the Museum of Contemporary Art, which was recently voted the best in the category of global structural design, at the World Architecture Fair in Barcelona, visitors will also have an opportunity to enjoy an array of other events such as theatre performances, dance revues, and concerts.
