A stroll through the past

Zagreb's Time Machine is a series of traditional events that take place on the streets of Zagreb. This year's Time Machine kicked off in mid-April and will continue until early October.

The streets of Zagreb have become alive again, folk singers and dancers have returned to Zagreb's central square, the Upper Town resounds with the sound of olden tunes and historical figures in period costumes are leisurely strolling about. Thus, another season of traditional events organized under the name of Zagreb's Time Machine started in mid-April and will go on until early October. The events include promenade concerts that are organized every Saturday between 11 AM and 1 PM. The musical pavilion, erected in the center of the park in 1891, is the place from which the sounds of waltzes, marches, arias from operettas and evergreens will spread across the parks. Citizens and visitors of Zagreb will be met by folk singers and dancers between 10 AM and 12 PM in the central square. In addition to presenting old customs through song and dance, home grown apples and traditional delicacies will be on offer. Between 10 and 11 AM the Upper town is reserved for street performers and their old city arias, and as of this year, they have been joined by historical figures in period costumes. Thus, between 5 and 8 PM, elegant ladies are accompanied by poets and novelists. You will also see a street photographer with his old fashioned camera, lanternists, and many others from the rich history of Zagreb.

All of these programs are intended to illustrate the rich cultural heritage and tradition of Zagreb, and every year something new is added. This year's addition is a traditional mechanical music box on which tunes are played for the citizens of Zagreb and their guests who are in the central square between 10 AM and 12 PM. A good way to see the most beautiful sights of Zagreb is by joining a three-hour mini bus sightseeing tour, which departs from in front of the Cathedral. There are always an ample number of raincoats on board to make sure that any sudden down pour does not spoil the tourists' pleasure.
