An exhibition: Saša Šekoranja – Polyphonies

Visiting the exhibition “Polyphonies”, by Saša Šekoranja, academic painter and a true flower-arranging virtuoso, will be a real treat and memorable moment for all fans of flowers and all things artistic.

Until January 26th 2014, Zagreb’s Museum of Arts and Crafts will feature the exhibition “Polyphonies”, by academic painter, flower-arranger, theatre set designer and photographer Saša Šekoranja. He is also the owner of a famous flower-shop cum gallery in the city centre and is known for his trademark flower arrangements. Saša Šekoranja has now gone a step further and created an impressive exhibition whereby he combined flowers with other techniques. He has juxtaposed flowers to his drawings and paintings and thus created 3-D compositions and installations.

The impressive array of installations – works in various techniques showcased in the exhibition celebrates flowers. The author himself describes his approach to work as “transferring a floral meadow into an indoor exhibit space, whereby he introduces fresh flowers and leaves it to rot and complete its life cycle. This reflects the artist’s view that art should not be, indeed must not be, like a herbarium, because plants in herbariums are dead and brown so one must refer to the notes to understand what each of the flowers would look like if they were alive. Art, however, must be alive and in no need of explanation.”

According to the exhibition curator, Arijana Koprčina Ph.D., with his paintings, installations and flowers, Saša Šekoranja introduces new creative aspects into art by using plant material, and by putting plants into the context of contemporary artistic production he becomes part of the growing trend which implies using them as a medium for artistic expression. Thus, he completes the cycle which leads from craft to art. The concept began with exhibitions in the window of Saša’s gallery and was finally transposed onto a large museum scale with imaginative installations and works featuring elements from nature, dedicated to the love of flowers, plants and the game of creation.
