Back to the Past
Every Saturday, starting from now until the end of September, the Tourist Board of the City of Zagreb offers its fellow-citizens and guests an array of happenings which evoke memories of times long-gone in the squares and streets of both the Lower and Upper Towns.
Here is an invitation to all of you who enjoy listening to scores of popular evergreens or canzone or whose feet are itching to swirl around a dance floor to the sounds of your favorite waltzes: Come to the Pavilion in Zrinjevac Park between 11 AM and 1 PM every Saturday from now until the end of September. The Pavilion is the venue of the so-called Promenade concerts featuring excellent musicians, orchestras, majorettes and others. Make sure you dress in a period costume as you and your dressed up dance partner stand a good chance of winning a weekend away for two.
The Tourist Board of the City of Zagreb has teamed up with the Dubrava Community Learning Center to organize a folklore scene on the main city square, every Saturday between 10 and 12 AM. Throughout the month of May, various amateur folklore groups will appear and showcase the dances and customs of villages around Zagreb. The list of Saturday events does not end there. From the Lower Town, we move to the Upper Town where the tunes of old melodies will remind you of past times. The Potepuh band, part of the Zagrebački Cinkuši group, will play for you between 10 and 11 AM in some of the most attractive locations in the Upper Town.
As the day begins to fade, you can take a stroll through the narrow alleys of the Upper Town in the company of costumed characters from the impressive history of the city of Zagreb. Viceroy Jelačić may personally come to greet you; the great Croatian female writer Marija Jurić Zagorka will be there for a pleasant chat; you will meet many other famous characters, such as the city guard, postman and the town's lamplighter who lights the old gas lights. Join us and spend some pleasant moments in the city of Zagreb.
