Reopened after a year of renovations

Zagreb’s popular Gradska kavana was reopened after almost a year of renovations, once again enabling the citizens of Zagreb and their guests to experience a nostalgic journey through Zagreb’s coffee drinking tradition.

This December, Gradska kavana (The City Coffeehouse), located at Zagreb’s central square of Ban Josip Jelačić and originally opened back in 1931, welcomed its first guests after extensive renovations. The latest renovations lasted almost a year and included a complete interior refurbishment as well as extensive “invisible” reconstruction works of the installations, a demanding process which lengthened the renovation time. After the extensive renovation three years ago worth 12 million kuna, as well as the latest refurbishment, the coffeehouse now features a renewed interior and new furniture, but more importantly – it still offers equally good coffee and boasts an expanded dessert menu.

The coffeehouse has no smoking area because it was not technically possible to install the special ventilation system required to meet the legal standard.

The coffeehouse is a popular gathering spot for many generations of Zagreb’s citizens and their guests, so its reopening was eagerly awaited by aficionados of old-fashioned meeting places such as this one.

The coffeehouse is housed in an Art-Deco building regarded as one of the most beautiful and luxurious structures in the city, so there is no doubt that it will become a favourite venue for anyone who likes to enjoy a cup of coffee and some cake whilst taking a break from sightseeing. Moreover, it is expected that, much like in the old days, the coffeehouse will be a place for social gatherings and themed evenings for which it was renowned in the past.
