The concert season at Gradec

Once again this year, between the 2nd and the 29th of July, the Zagreb Summer Evenings, one of the oldest summer festivals in the city, will feature numerous concerts by renowned musicians from all over the world. The first Festival of Operetta and Musicals will also take place as part of this music event in the Upper Town.

Between the 2nd and the 29th of July, the open spaces of the Upper Town will be the venues for the Zagreb Summer Evenings.

This summer festival will feature exquisite concerts by renowned musicians from across the globe in the beautiful ambiance of the Upper Town, the Gradec Stage, and the atrium of the Klovićevi Dvori Gallery. During this period, sixteen various artistic events will take place, in which top class performers of jazz and ethno music from Croatia, as well as abroad, will take part.

This year’s Zagreb Summer Evenings will be opened by the Italian ensemble I Solisti Veneti, and the Zagreb audience will once again have an opportunity to enjoy the group of singers, dancers and musicians Pietrarsa, with a repertoire of Neapolitan canzone. There will also be a performance by Edin Karamazov, who will be playing the lute to accompany Macedonian vocalist Kaliopi, while the Dialogos ensemble will present their project “Judita”.

Two of the leading early music ensembles in the world, the New London Consort and The Musicians of the Globe from Great Britain, conducted by Philip Pichett, will take us back to the times of early baroque with musical sounds of nowadays largely forgotten instruments such as the cittern (or cither), hurdy-gurdy, bandora (or Bandore) and rebec. Among the home-grown talent, we would like to point out a performance by pianist and composer Matej Meštrović, who has gathered excellent young artists around the project “Orient Expresto”.

Their performances are a fusion of classical and ethno music with visual light effects created by the lightwell /svjetlovir/ instrument, which they invented to provide listeners with an unforgettable sensory experience, both acoustic and visual.

A real music treat will be the performances by flautist, composer, and singer Tamara Obrovac. She will hold a concert at this year’s Zagreb Summer Evenings along with the members of the Istrairska /IstriaIreland/ Ensemble, which gathers musicians from Croatia, Ireland and Slovenia; they will cover the traditional Irish and Istrian music heritage.

This year’s edition of the Zagreb Summer Evenings has another treat in store – the 1st Festival of Operetta and Musical, which will feature performances by members of the Theatre of Operetta and Musical of Budapest, with their “Operetta Gala”, and the representatives of the oldest Hungarian National Theatre from Miskolc with “The Land of Smiles” by Franc Lehar, on the 4th and the 9th of July respectively.

Tickets for all shows are priced at 50, 80, and 100 kuna and can be purchased at the Tourist Information Centre at Ban Jelačić Square and the box office of the Vatroslav Lisinski concert hall. On the day of the concert, tickets can also be purchased at the atrium of the Klovićevi Dvori Gallery and the Gradec Stage.
