Wine Offer Crowned with World Gold
While staying in Zagreb you have the ideal opportunity to visit Croatian Zagorje. Some of its many attractions are some that are “liquid” – excellent wines whose quality has been recently confirmed by two world gold medals. This is a good reason to visit the wine cellars and the village houses where local specialties are always followed with excellent wine.
Wine maker, Boris Drenški from Hum na Sutli has won two gold medals for his Chardonnay and Rhine Riesling wines, traditionally awarded by the most famous world wine magazine, Decanter. The recognition is even more valuable in light of the fact that the medals were won in an exceptionally strong international competition of 9,400 wines from around the world.
The international recognition of this wine grown in Hum na Sutli was preceded by many months of a rating process in which the marks given by professionals from different backgrounds – oenology, hotel management, catering, dealers and consumers were added. This exceptional recognition has put the dessert wines from Croatian Zagorje in a small and distinguished group of the 12 best in the world.
Boris Drenški's vineyards are about 300 meters above sea level and are more exposed to sunlight so the grapes contain a high percentage of sugar. His annual production is 8,000 liters of high quality wine (Pinot Gris, Chardonnay and Rhine Riesling).
Croatia is known for the quality of its wines and it is divided into two wine regions – continental and coastal, in which there are 12 sub-regions. The continental region numbers about 300 makers of wine with appellation of controlled origin and guests can taste them in catering facilities, wine cellars and along wine roads, and of course they can also buy the wines in stores.
Even though wine is always appreciated and popular, the biggest wine-related tradition is Martinje (St. Martin’s Day November 11th) – the holiday of wine making which may be just another reason to visit the region that has been decorated with two gold medals for wine this year.
