Zagreb and Rijeka will host the European Universities Games in 2016. The sports event will feature more than five thousand student athletes from 350 universities across Europe competing in 21 different sports disciplines.

In 1987, Zagreb was host to the global Universiade, organized under the slogan “World of the Young for a World of Peace”. The mascot of the games was the popular squirrel nicknamed Zagi, which was created by Nedeljko Dragić – one of the most creative authors of the Zagreb School of Animated Film. However, the charismatic Zagi needs a successor, so the “European University Games Zagreb Rijeka 2016” Association has published a competition for its design. Works can be submitted until November 1st, and the rules can be found online at www.eug2016.com and www.studentskisport.com. After the deadline has passed, a panel of experts will select the five best works. The mascot will finally be chosen among the five finalists by a public online vote. One must keep in mind, however, that the mascot must promote the values of these student games organized under the slogan “The Heart Believes, the Mind Accomplishes”.
