A large retrospective exhibition by Jagoda Buić

The summer season at the Museum of Arts and Crafts will be marked by a large retrospective exhibition by Jagoda Buić, a renowned Croatian avant-garde artist and tapestry master, who will be presenting some two hundred of her best works.

Until August 15th, the Museum of Arts and Crafts will be featuring a large retrospective exhibition by Croatian avant-garde artist and tapestry master, Jagoda Buić. It is the most complex individual exhibition ever to feature at the museum, which is further proof of greatness of this renowned artist. Visitors will have an opportunity to view more than 200 of her large tapestries, and the artist herself participated in designing the exhibition concept.

Of course, these are not classical tapestries; Jagoda Buić has launched numerous trends with her distinctive artistic creativity, and created an array of thematically and technically different art collections.

The artist is a very vital eighty-year-old who is often praised and quoted in Croatia as well as abroad. Born in Split, she owes her renowned artistic temperament to her Dalmatian roots. These days, however, she divides her time between Provence, Paris, and Dubrovnik.

Many have hailed her as the forerunner of avant-garde trends in the region, which will be evident in her retrospective exhibition.
Among more than 200 works, there are 26 characteristic tapestries, most of which are on loan from distinguished foreign museums: the UNESCO Paris Department for Art, the Museum of Fine Arts in Bordeaux, the Centre for Contemporary Art and Sculpture in Paris, the Modern Gallery of Zagreb, and the Art Gallery of Split. Apart from tapestries, the renowned artist has dedicated her work to costume and set design for theatre. She has created more than 120 costumes and sets for theatre, film, and TV, part of which are featured in the exhibition, such as ones for “Hamlet”, “Aida” and others.

Jagoda Buić has participated in more than 200 independent and joint exhibitions across the globe. She is the winner of an array of prestigious awards, such as the Grand Prix Itamaraty, which she received at the São Paolo biennale in 1975. She has also worked at numerous universities worldwide, such as the Royal College of Art in London, the Cranbrook Academy of Art in Denver, and the Atlantic Centre for Arts in Florida, where she worked as a teacher.
