A Night of Biology

The late afternoon and early evening hours of March 8th are reserved for popular science. Once again, the Biology department of Zagreb’s Faculty of Science will open the doors to its laboratories as part of an event called the Night of Biology.

Between 3 p.m. and 11 p.m. on March 8th, Zagreb’s Faculty of Science will be the venue for the Night of Biology, for the second year in a row. During this event all laboratory doors will be opened to the public and students, as well as professors, will be on hand to present new scientific discoveries, research and methods of scientific work that can be applied to daily life.

Last year’s event was organized by the heads of the Biology Department, and this year they will be joined by other departments including geology, geography, and chemistry. Therefore, visitors at the Night of Biology event will have an opportunity to familiarize themselves with numerous discoveries from the aforementioned scientific fields and all programs will be presented in a modern, attractive and easily understandable way. Programs will be suited to all age groups and, through simple and interesting experiments as well as short presentations and workshops, each visitor will truly get to “experience” science firsthand. Some of the themes of this year’s event are: DNA – the genes you eat; Algae in forensics; Creating your own carnivorous plant; Welcome to the ice age; What are the algae whispering to us, as well as many others.

The event will be held in four locations across town.
The largest part of the biology programme will take place at the faculty building on Roosevelt square, while other parts will be featured on Marulić square and by the Botanical Garden. Scientific points of interest from the fields of geology, geography, and chemistry will be presented in the faculty building at Horvatovac 102a.
