The most popular toys in the world, the Barbie doll and Lego bricks are now featured in an exhibition, which is arriving in Zagreb on its European tour, where it will be put on show at the Hypo Centre between the 15th and 21st of May.
What they look like and who their creators are is already a well-known story, but seeing hundreds of Barbies and many more Legos in one place is certainly an experience which many people have never had. This is why the exhibition is expected to attract thousands of visitors, younger and older alike, as it features items which marked the childhoods of numerous generations. Visitors will have the opportunity to get to know the history of these toys, but also their current economic importance. Did you know, for example, that sweet little Barbie generates revenues of around 3.6 billion dollars? It is undoubtedly the best-selling toy of all times, and interest in the doll has not diminished to this day, with one doll bought every three seconds somewhere in the world. Its founder is Ruth Handler, co-founder of a toy factory in California, who has gained world fame with Barbie. Why this doll is so special is known to all those who have often created fashion based on Barbie’s new outfits. Fashion and Barbie are, therefore, two inseparable parts.
And while the girls play with the popular Barbies, the boys will certainly find the impressive collection of Legos much more interesting.
The story of Legos began in Denmark in 1932. They were invented by Ole Kirk Christiansen when he opened a woodworking shop to produce toys in Billund, in southern Denmark. About 15 years later, he discovered an ideal material for producing toys – plastic, so in 1949 he developed a prototype of a contemporary Lego block.
The exhibition has thus far travelled across Europe – from Lisbon, Athens, Thessaloniki, Budapest, Bratislava, Bucharest, Warsaw, Munich, Hamburg, Frankfurt, Stuttgart, Leipzig, Vienna and Mallorca to Ljubljana, and it can now also be viewed by the Zagreb audience.
