Cultural Heritage - The Jewish Museum Zagreb

The Jewish Museum Zagreb will hold an exceptionally valuable collection of sacral art. Its opening is scheduled to take place on the European Day of Jewish Culture.

The opening of the Jewish Museum Zagreb is scheduled to take place on September 4^th, the European Day of Jewish Culture. In addition to the already existing collection in the Dubrovnik synagogue, this will be the second museum of Jewish culture in Croatia.

The museum is located on the premises of the Jewish community of Zagreb, which was founded in 1806 and  today  it counts approximately 1200 members. The museum’s 150 exhibits have all been donated and constitute  a collection which tells the story of the circle of life as seen through Jewish traditions and  religious holidays. Besides valuable metal and textile items, as well as artefacts  of sacral art, the holding boasts the Torah, the most valuable exhibits on display in Zagreb’s new museum. The highlights include Šik’s library dating back to the 16^th century and a number of other antique items which will  certainly attract visitors and art lovers to the new museum.

The opening of this museum is yet another in a string of  activities aimed at preserving the Jewish  tradition and culture. The Jewish community of Zagreb  experienced the biggest surge in economy and culture  during the period between the two world wars. Sadly, less then one quarter of all Zagreb’s Jews survived World War II.
