Days of Marija Jurić Zagorka - Remembering the Most Popular Croatian Female Writer
The Days of Marija Jurić Zagorka once again remind us of the large and important opus of the most popular Croatian author and the first Croatian female political journalist.
Organised by the Centre for Women’s studies, on 23 and 24 November the Days of Marija Jurić Zagorka will be held for the 12th time. The memorial apartment of Marija Jurić Zagorka will be open to visitors, and that will be just part of a packed programme remembering the impressive opus of the most popular Croatian author and the first Croatian female political journalist. The Days of Marija Jurić Zagorka open with the symbolic laying of a wreath on the writer’s grave in Zagreb’s Mirogoj cemetery. There will also be a prize giving for the best student essays on women’s and gender issues. There will also be a presentation of books and projects, as well as literary meetings and a Walk in Zagorka’s Footsteps.
Marija Jurić Zagorka (1873 - 1957) was the first professional female journalist in Croatia and the most widely-read female Croatian author. She fought against social discrimination, German and Hungarian cultural imperialism and for women’s rights. She wrote popular novels in which love stories were intertwined with elements from Croatian history.
