Fifty years of the Turopolje Museum

In late March, an exhibition, “50 years of the Turopolje Museum”, was opened at the facilities of the Zagreb Tourist Board. This is yet another exhibition that represents the rich cultural heritage of Zagreb’s surroundings.

In order to present the cultural heritage of Zagreb’s surroundings, known as the Ring of Zagreb, to its visitors as well as citizens, the facilities of the Zagreb County Tourist Board are traditionally used to present the features of the region to the public. As of late March, an exhibition called “50 years of the Turopolje Museum” has been opened in their offices on Preradovićeva Street in the city center.
The exhibition presents the most important cultural treasures of the Turopolje Museum, which is located in Velika Gorica, a town southeast of Zagreb. The exhibition was opened to commemorate the 50th anniversary of the Turopolje Museum and it can be visited in Zagreb until April 6th, when the aforementioned treasures will be returned to the Turopolje Museum in Velika Gorica.
Turopolje Museum is located in the center of Velika Gorica , on the eastern edge of the city park. The appearance and purpose of the structure has changed throughout the turbulent history of the area, and first writings about the history of Turopolje originate from the 17th century. The founding of the museum in 1960 was preceded by years of organized material-gathering, the result of which is nowadays divided into four main collections: the ethnographic, the cultural and historic, the archaeological, and the collection from the National Liberation War. Five years ago, to mark its 45th anniversary, the museum presented its art collection for the first time.
Apart from the permanent exhibits, which are located on the first floor, the ground floor contains a gallery where occasional exhibitions or interesting art workshops are organized for children and their parents.
Due to space limitations, the Zagreb exhibition features just a small part of the Turopolje heritage and it primarily relies on the archive of texts and photographs, which represent the activity of the museum since founding until present day.
That is the best invitation to visit the Turopolje Museum in Velika Gorica, which also contains an array of other interesting features for tourists.
