Plays in Opatovina
The Histrion Theater Troupe has become almost synonymous with Zagreb. This year, they will entertain the city’s citizens, and their guests, with the play “Cardenio” by Stephen Greenblatt and Charles Mea. The world premiere of this play, inspired by a lost work of Shakespeare, will be held on the 11th of July and, from then until the 9th of August, it is scheduled to be performed almost daily.
An additional treat for theater audiences is the very ambiance of Opatovina, the authentic old-city area that bursts with character, which the Histrion Troupe has chosen as the venue for its performances. From August 12th until August 30th plays from their earlier repertoire will also be performed there.
The Histrion Theater Troupe was founded in 1975 by Zlatko Vitez (its current art director) and, on July 11th, the exact same day as the world premiere of this year’s play, the Histrion Theater Troupe will celebrate its 33rd anniversary!
In its early days, the Histrion Theater Troupe was a travelling theater company but, in 1986, they launched the Histrionic Summers project and thus obtained their first permanent (albeit summer-only) address in Zagreb’s Opatovina. However this semi-permanent abode has not detracted from theatrical wanderings across Croatia and beyond. Indeed, throughout the years they have staged a total of 53 premieres!
Since last year, the Histrion Theater Troupe has finally landed a truly permanent address in Zagreb, a house on Ilica 90, known as the “House of Histrionics” where audiences can enjoy their humor all year round!
