The Middle Ages on the main square

Should you find yourself at Zagreb’s main square between the 18th and the 22nd of May, do not be frightened by the atmosphere: you are not the victim of either a joke or a time-machine! You will become one of the many participants of the traditional St. Mark’s Fair of ancient trades, dominated as in ancient times by knights, noblemen, rogues and peasants.

When the Middle Ages return to the main square it means it is time for yet another exciting St. Mark’s Fair: a festival of ancient trades and produce, food and drink, music, knights games, and costumed characters. This year the fair will take place between the 18th and the 22nd of May so, if you come to Zagreb during this period, do not be surprised if you find yourself coming across numerous costumed knights, noblemen and their ladies, pickpockets, rope-makers, alchemists, blacksmiths, armourers, falconers… each plays a role without which this recreation of the past would not be complete.

The fair was conceived as a return to the Middle Ages, so everything is dedicated to the image that contemporary generations can see only in films. Each of the costumed characters will gladly talk to anyone, demonstrate their knowledge and skills, and convey the past with romantic stories and anecdotes. In the meantime, the craftsmen will be making ancient souvenirs, and should you find yourself amidst a chaotic crowd, do not be alarmed: it is all part of the stage show.

Every year the fair gathers a large number of tradesmen who sell their traditional goods at promotional prices, so every tourist will have an opportunity to take home a piece of Zagreb’s past. If anyone thinks they may go hungry, do not worry, there will be numerous local delicacies on offer. Moreover, there will also be treats from other cities such as Koprivnica, where many tradesmen also attend the local, annual Renaissance Fair in September. Organizers of this fair are the renowned street musicians from Zagreb, The Street Kings, as well as the Zagreb and Koprivnica Tourist Boards.
