Tourist Attraction above the City
The travel portal TripAdvisor recommends Medvednica Nature Park as the number one attraction in Zagreb. Towering above the city, its highest peak Sljeme can be easily reached on foot in less than two hours.
According to TripAdvisor, Medvednica Nature Park is the number one must-see attraction in Zagreb. At any time of year this park is one of the favourite excursion spots for the citizens of Zagreb who regularly climb up to Sljeme – the highest peak of Medvednica at 1033 metres above sea level.
The forests of Medvednica flow down almost to the very city centre. Besides abounding in plant and animal varieties, including many endemic species, it offers a host of recreational and educational opportunities for nature lovers. In addition to the kilometres of well marked mountain trails, Medvednica also offers cycling and educational routes, as well as ski trails. Just as a reminder, Sljeme is the venue of the unique Snow Queen slalom race which has become globally famous for its exceptional atmosphere marked by unbridled expressions of support by the spectators. The park itself features a silver ore mine, which is currently the only one in Europe opened to tourists and they can even mint their own silver coins there. However, the story of Medvednica Nature Park does not end here. There is also the old burg of Medvedgrad with the best preserved fortress dating back to the 13th century. It is also the centre of the cultural and tourist event which takes place under the name “Medieval Days on Medvednica”. During the event the old customs and spirit of the Middle Ages are revived before the eyes of tens of thousands of visitors.
Medvednica offers a lot more than that, but we shall keep it to ourselves. Instead of sharing all the park’s secrets we invite you to see and discover the beauties of the mountain above Zagreb. There are a number of mountain lodges, restaurants and two hotels - Tomislavov Dom and Hotel Zvonimir na Hunjki. Besides on foot, you can reach Sljeme by car along an asphalt road.
