Zagreb on two wheels
It is quite easy to get to know Zagreb’s streets, parks and recreational zones, as well as the city’s surroundings. A very pleasant and environmentally friendly way to do it is by bicycle, an increasingly popular mode of transportation for numerous citizens of Zagreb.
Eight circular bicycle paths in Zagreb’s popular nature resort – the Medvednica Nature Park, will be officially opened for the season as of April 21st when the Croatian Academic Sports Federation and the Maksimir Triathlon Club will join forces to organize the Green Devil Race. Not only during the official season, but at any time of year, you will find marked paths which will soon be provided with QR codes for smart phones, thus offering cyclists the audio guidance of the route and the landmarks along it. Of course, fans of traditional forms of orientation can also use classic bicycle route maps.
Recreational cycling is also possible in the urban recreational zones of Bundek and Jarun lakes, as well as Maksimir Park.
The days when cycling used to be only a form of recreation are long gone. An increasing number of Zagrebers nowadays rely on their bicycles to provide them with the cheapest, most environmentally friendly, and oftentimes quickest form of urban transportation. Zagreb currently features over 220 kilometres of bicycle paths and lanes, while urban development plans envisage that their length will eventually increase to a total of 360 kilometres. There is no reason not to enjoy a cycling sightseeing tour of Zagreb providing you exercise some necessary caution – bright clothing, a helmet and gloves will protect you from possible injuries, making your cycling experience much more pleasant and safe.
