5th International Competition of Young Conductors “Lovro von Matačić”

If you are interested to find out who are the best young conductors in the world and what they are like at work, make sure not to miss the large, 5th International Competition of Young conductors “Lovro von Matačić”, which will, as always, take place at the Vatroslav Lisinski Concert Hall.

The 5th International Competition of Young Conductors “Lovro von Matačić”, which will take place between the 3rd and the 7th of October at the Vatroslav Lisinski Concert Hall, will once again feature an interesting contest of world-class conductors of a younger generation. This renowned competition takes place in Zagreb every four years and the first edition took place in 1995. The competition has since been attracting large numbers of renowned, world-class conductors.

The competition will be open to the public so anyone who is interested will have an opportunity to follow their favourites and, of course, enjoy the music. As the qualifications have already taken place, the contest will be the second round of the competition while selection of the best of the best will be trusted to a strict international jury panel. From the sixteen contestants in the second round, they will have to choose the six best for the grand finale. The jury is comprised of numerous experts from Croatia, Austria, Hungary, Finland and Germany.

Competing candidates also originate from numerous countries. In alphabetical order, they are; Maria Badstue (Denmark), Alexey Bogorad (Russia), Dimitrios Botinis (Greece), Domeniko Briški (Croatia), Chich-Yuan Michael Chang (Taiwan), Byoungwhie Chung (South Korea), Robert Farkas (Hungary), Huan Jing (China), Brandon Keith Brown (USA), Stilian Kirov (Bulgaria), Hideaki Matsumura (Japan), Filip Pavišia (Croatia), Maiku Shibata (Japan), Zoi Tsokanou (Greece), Kah Chun Won (Singapore) and Tanaka Yuko (Japan).

The International Competition of Young Conductors “Lovro von Matačić” is being organized by the Lovro and Lilly Matačić Foundation, and it is open to conductors up to 35 years of age. The foundation was established in 1987 in accordance with the will of the bearers, with the goal of perfecting particularly talented young conductors in Croatia as well as abroad.
Lovro von Matačić (1899-1985) was a renowned Croatian conductor and composer, considered by many to have been part of the global music elite of the 20th century.
