A Christmas fairy-tale

Advent has begun, and the Christmas atmosphere can be felt everywhere. Join the Zagreb holiday season fairy-tale and discover why Advent in the Croatian capital truly is different, more diverse and romantic than anywhere else.

The Advent season began on the first Advent Sunday with the traditional lighting of the first Advent candle at the main city square of Ban Josip Jelačić. The candle lighting ritual will continue every Sunday until Christmas. No matter which way you head from the main square, you will come across various other interesting events and experience the holiday spirit.

For many, the highlight of this year’s winter fairy-tale in Zagreb will be the ice park, located in the beautiful square of King Tomislav, which all fans of ice-skating, music and various other off-ice entertainment events will have an opportunity to enjoy between December 5th and January 18th. This year’s novelty is the “AdvEUnt – European Advent” programme, taking place at the European Square, in the pedestrian zone, only steps away from Zagreb’s central square. If you want to have some fun and buy some original souvenirs along the way, make sure to visit this event. Romantics and all of those who believe good wishes are connected with happy occurrences must make their way towards the Dolac Market on December 22nd at 6 p.m., when the Kapulica and the Lanterns performance will take place. As part of the programme, thousands of paper lanterns with thousands of wishes will be released into the air, illuminating the night sky over the city.

Until the beginning of January, fans of music and dance will have plenty of opportunities to indulge in the rhythms of waltz and evergreens at nearby Zrinjevac Park, while fans of jazz will be able to enjoy their music at Cvjetni Trg – the Flower Square.

One of the most popular aspects of Advent in Zagreb is the cultural-entertainment program “Fooling around by the Funicular” on Tomićeva Street, featuring a traditional and familiar, yet innovative and modern cultural programme, as well as a diverse catering offer. Do not forget the fair of unconventional artefacts taking place at the Home of Croatian Artists, a beautiful building designed by the renowned academic sculptor – Ivan Meštrović.

A live nativity scene in which amateur actors embody the Holy family will be on display in front of the Zagreb Cathedral.

All of this is just a part of the events ongoing in Zagreb throughout December, along with sightseeing tours of the city, a diverse gastronomic offer, excellent shopping opportunities, and accommodation options in numerous hotels, hostels and private rooms.
