A retrospective, travelling exhibition of works by Miroslav Kraljević

Until April 6th, the Modern Gallery will feature the largest retrospective, travelling exhibition of works by a master of Croatian Modernism, Miroslav Kraljević, which will also be displayed in Venice, Split, Osijek and Dubrovnik after it leaves Zagreb.

To mark the 100th anniversary of the death of Miroslav Kraljević, until April 6th the Modern Gallery will feature the largest retrospective, travelling exhibition of works by this master of Croatian modern art. The exhibition premiered in Požega, where Miroslav Kraljević spent most of his childhood and came in contact with art at a very young age. The exhibition features more than 200 paintings, drawings and sculptures created during the six years of the artist’s intensive work before he died at a tragically young age of 28.

Miroslav Kraljević was born in 1885 in Gospić to a noble family. He was educated in Vienna and Munich, where he formed the so-called Munich circle along with great painters Josip Račić, Vladimir Becić and Oskar Herman, who are considered the pioneers of Croatian modern art, also known as Croatian Moderna. He spent part of his life in Paris, where he reached the peak of his creativity, and later also lived in Zagreb where he died from tuberculosis in 1913. His works feature various motifs and attributes of style, ranging from portraits and drawings of flirty minxes, dancers, hedonists and members of lower classes of the Paris society, to sculptures with hedonistic attributes, self-portraits, portraits of his family members, etc…

After the Zagreb exhibition, the works of this great artist will also be exhibited in Venice, Split, Osijek and Dubrovnik. During the exhibition in Zagreb, the Modern Gallery will also be organizing educational programmes, workshops for children and interactive, expert guidance.

The exhibition can be viewed between Tuesday and Friday from 11 a.m. until 7 p.m., as well as on Saturdays and Sundays between 11 a.m. and 2 p.m.
