Crossing the Boundaries at the Typhlological Museum

Until December 14th, Zagreb’s Typhlological Museum, a unique and special museum in Europe which deals with the problems of disabled persons, especially the blind and visually impaired, will feature an interesting exhibition, “Crossing the Boundaries”, which demonstrates the greatness of disabled athletes.

People with no physical disabilities tend to take sporting activities for granted, but the number of difficulties the disabled come across when indulging in recreational sports are often much greater than the number of opportunities they have. However, many of them have overcome those obstacles and achieved notable results as professional as well as amateur athletes.

The exhibition at Zagreb’s Typhlological Museum, which remains open to visitors until December 14th, demonstrates the difficulties disabled people come across in pursuing various sporting activities, how they overcome them and what gives them the strength to persevere. The exhibition titled “Crossing the Boundaries” is another one in the series of educational exhibitions that the only European museum of this kind has organized to raise the public’s awareness of the problems encountered by the blind and visually impaired. The underlying idea was not only to show how difficult it is for the disabled to engage in sporting activities, but to show that everybody is able to do it, regardless of physical disabilities. That has been proven by the many athletes who have achieved notable results against all odds; those who have moved boundaries and succeeded in what many thought impossible. By doing so, they have made sport even more attractive and more closely tied to society, while this exhibition shows how sporting activity and results do not necessarily have to be the goal, but also a suitable means for a better life.

One of the two goals of the exhibition is also to make people aware of the fact that physically disabled people can achieve whatever they put their minds to, albeit with a little more effort.
