Cycling for a cleaner city

Zagreb will be one of forty cities partaking in the cycling contest The European Cycling Challenge 2015, thus contributing to the lowering of the CO2 emission and hopefully encouraging more people to use bicycles as the primary form of transport in the city.

Throughout May, in cooperation with its partners, the city of Zagreb will partake in the European Cycling Challenge. The challenge is to encourage as many citizens as possible to use bicycles as the primary form of transport in the city in order to reduce CO2 emissions in the cities.

The European Cycling Challenge (ECC 2015) is a city cycling contest in which the citizens join their city’s team, follow cycling routes via the Cycling 365 application, and compete against other European cities. This year’s challenge has been accepted by forty European cities, including Zagreb and four other capitals – Rome, Warsaw, Prague and Tallinn.

Zagreb currently has 260 kilometres of cycling paths. The project By Bike on a Bus, and the counting of the cyclist passes Bike Totem, were initiated over the past year, but safety comes first since there are more and more cyclists on the city streets.

The partners of the European Cycling Challenge are the Zagreb Tourist Board, the French Institute, the Croatian Auto-club, Nextbike, the Safety in Traffic and My Bicycle associations, as well as the Meteorological and Hydrological Service and the Croatian Institute for Spatial Development.

The final event of the programme will be the Urban Bike Picnic on June 13th at Zrinjevac Park. Detailed info about this event can be found online at www.cyclingchallenge.eu
